Espigueiros do Soajo
Soajo, Arcos de Valdevez
About this place
24 granite granaries show how architecture protected and preserved grain.
Stone outside, food protected within.
On Soajo's threshing floor, 24 granaries change the way you look at granite. They are structures built to store and dry grain, rather than little houses. Their raised position and openings serve that purpose. The oldest dates to 1782, according to Alto Minho information.
The visit takes few steps and a little time to notice the details. Look at the repeated shapes, supports and finishes without climbing or entering the structures. This is rural heritage with a practical purpose, beyond a photographic backdrop. Combine this stop with a walk through Soajo; the two visits fit naturally into the same morning.

Three details to take with you
- 01
The raised structures
Observe the supports separating the granary from the ground and think about protecting grain.
- 02
The openings
Storage needs ventilation. The stone's shape answers a practical need.
- 03
The finishing details
Look for details at the top and compare the granaries, keeping your distance from the structures.
Your visit, at your own pace
25 min – 40 min suggestedAllow half an hour
25–40 minutes lets you appreciate the ensemble without turning it into an hours-long activity.
Do not climb the structures
Granaries are not photo platforms. Observe from available public spaces.
Add Soajo's streets
The centre, pillory and threshing floor complement each other. There is no need to move the car at each stop.
The site is outdoors and stone may be slippery. Softer light helps reveal shapes, but choose access according to ground conditions.
