About this place

A submerged village and a Roman road: two stories to understand the landscape before exploring it.

More to discover

A village beneath the water. A road across the empire.

The Museu Etnográfico de Vilarinho da Furna preserves the memory of a community that lost its home when the dam was built. Household objects and farming tools help you imagine daily life beyond photographs of the ruins. It is a way to understand work and how life in the mountains was organised, as well as the story of a submerged village.

In the same complex, Museu da Geira shifts the scale of the journey. The Via Nova linked Braga and Astorga in Roman times; the galleries explore the road, its construction and transport. Visiting both spaces before the reservoir gives meaning to what the map shows. Plan a combined visit rather than treating each museum as a separate journey.

Three details to take with you

  1. 01

    Objects with a past life

Find a tool you do not recognise and read what it was used for. Its interest lies in the everyday act it represents.

  2. 02

    The Roman road

At Museu da Geira, observe how roads were built and used before modern transport.

  3. 03

    Two scales of landscape

A village and a road linking cities reveal the mountains as a land people lived in and travelled through.

Your visit, at your own pace

1 h 30 – 2 h suggested

A visit to the same complex

Museu Etnográfico, Museu da Geira and the Park Gateway share Campo do Gerês' centre. Check admission arrangements.

Plan your weekday

Municipal information states that it is usually closed on Mondays. Reconfirm before leaving, especially on public holidays.

Partial accessibility

The municipality notes that the first floor of the Museu Etnográfico is not accessible to people with reduced mobility. Ask for guidance to adapt your visit.

This is a useful stop for understanding the area, especially on rainy days. If you then head to the reservoir, take a warm layer: the outdoor visit is a separate part of your plan.
