About this place

A waterside landscape holding a community's memory. The ruins only appear when the water level allows.

More to discover

The water covers the village. Its memory lives on.

Vilarinho's waters hide a story of change. In the early 1970s, the reservoir's creation submerged Vilarinho da Furna. Where you now see water and mountains, there were houses, paths and a community with its own ways of organising life.

Parts of the old village sometimes reappear as the water level falls. Do not plan your trip counting on that sight: levels vary and the shores need care. A good visit begins at the museum in Campo do Gerês and continues at a public viewpoint over the reservoir. Even with no ruins visible, the landscape gains depth once you know its story.

Three details to take with you

  1. 01

    The shape of the shores

Notice how the waterline changes the valley's appearance. Exposed ground is not necessarily a safe path.

  2. 02

    The place that disappeared

After the museum, imagine the scale of a community in this valley without searching for ruins at all costs.

  3. 03

    The mountain frame

The water is not the only attraction: the surrounding terrain reveals the setting of the former village.

Choose permitted access

The idea is to observe the reservoir from a safe public spot. It is not a full walk around the water.

Ruins without a guarantee

We do not guarantee visibility of the submerged village. Water levels and ground conditions change.

Combine with the museum

Allow time for Campo do Gerês's Museu Etnográfico first; the story makes the stop more interesting.

In winter, low light can enhance the landscape, but water, mud and damp stone require distance from unstable shores.
